The linguistic term ‘Two-Spirit’ was invented in 1990

The term ‘Two-Spirit’ – often abbreviated to ‘2S’, and particularly common in Canada – is a modern invention. It was first coined at the Indigenous Lesbian and Gay International Gathering in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 19901.
