Expected improvements in mental health after medical transition are not observed at the population level.

In a large-scale nationwide Finnish cohort, adolescents who underwent medical transition continued to require high levels of specialist psychiatric care during follow-up. Group-level analyses did not show a decline in psychiatric treatment needs after transition, suggesting a mismatch between commonly assumed treatment benefits and observed long-term mental health outcomes.
