Recent cohorts show a marked increase in adolescent referrals with pre-existing psychiatric morbidity.
In a nationwide Finnish study, referrals to gender identity services increased substantially after 2010, with a growing proportion of adolescents already receiving specialist psychiatric treatment prior to referral. While the study does not examine rapid-onset gender dysphoria as a diagnostic construct, it documents a clear shift in referral patterns and clinical profiles over time, including a higher baseline mental health burden in more recent cohorts.
